The Tree House – Monkeys
There are three types of monkeys that we are currently caring for, these are Bonnet Macaque, Rhesus Macaque and Langurs.

Finn
Another rescued baby bought in, whose mother had died in a traffic accident. Langurs are driven in to towns by humans who are cutting down the forests; they go looking for food etc, and do not understand how to safely cross roads, of course. Finn was able to go straight on to the correct formula

Elfin
A call from a member of the public led us to a very sick wild young langur. She had been knocked down on the national highway and taken home the day before by a concerned lady, who had hoped she’d be ready to be released by morning. When we collected her, her injuries proved to

Puck
There was a long delay in getting this baby to our care, as he had been taken to another rescue center but they were unable to cope with him. He came into care following a traffic accident where his mother was killed and had suffered an injury himself. His head was badly swollen and there

Ella
Reason for being at The Tree House : Ella was brought into the center by the forestry department as a very young and totally dependant baby, a few months old. Her mother had been killed in a traffic accident. She was bottle reared with 24 hr human care and 2 hourly feeds initially. She is

Evie
Reason for being at The Tree House : Evie was a tiny baby, orphaned by a traffic accident which killed her mother and bottle reared here. Evie quickly bonded with Ella and now they are inseparable sisters. Evie is quite shy in nature, but very affectionate to those she knows are her friends. She is

Shaylee
Shaylee was brought to us by the forestry department following a traffic accident and in a very bad state. We were almost certain she would need to be euthanized. As well as her other injuries, she was totally blind after a blow to her head. Although totally wild, she started to take food, so we

Alfie
Alfi was bought to us as a 6 month old baby, when dogs had killed his mother. He had a large bite wound on his back that our vets treated and stitched. Alfi was very unhappy and at first refused to eat. Volunteers spent long hours with him encouraging him to do so with every

Pan
We were called out on a monkey emergency call, after a traffic accident involving a monkey, and found Pan on the roadside. Although only 4 to 5 months old, he was by that age, not willing to substitute his mother for a human and a feeding bottle. He did take fruit and vegetables however and

Christelle
Christelle was about 5 months old on arrival and was bought to the rescue center by someone who said she had been attacked by dogs. After having her for a few days we now think she had probably been kept by them as a chained “pet” and perhaps attacked by their own dog as she

Ellette
Bought to us by the Goa forestry dept after the death of her mother. She had jumped from a building and hit her head and died on the pavement. Rearing baby langurs from this age is notoriously difficult, they are very sensitive to the change in milk, to stress and human germs. After extensive research

Monkey
John was born in the UK in 1951 and served 5 years in the British Royal Army Veterinary Corps. After leaving the army John became Chairman of the Hunt Saboteurs Association in 1974.

Test
A call from a member of the public led us to a very sick wild young langur. She had been knocked down on the national highway and taken home the day before by a concerned lady, who had hoped she’d be ready to be released by morning.

Sasha
Before coming here, Sasha was being kept as a pet in a restaurant in Candolim.

Hilary
Hilary was illegally bought as a family pet after her mother had been killed in order to capture her from the wild.

Ramu
His plight was reported to us and John immediately went to rescue him. He was found sitting on the ground chained to a length of bamboo. He was very thin and existed on mainly sweets and chocolate from the family’s children.

Sweety
Sweety, a bonnet macaque, has been kept as a captive pet since a baby, when she lost her arm in an accident. Although she has always been well looked after, first by her original rescuer, and then by kind animal people, she had never had the opportunity to meet and associate with any other monkeys, or had a monkey friend, this interaction being very important in any primates life.

Matilda
We had several reports of a baby monkey being used for begging at the tourist night market in Baga, but all attempts to find it proved fruitless as the owner knowing it was illegal, took off.

Butch
Butch was dumped loose at the Tree House, obviously a chained ‘pet’ who was no longer wanted. He is very nervous and clearly had been ill treated. Initially he shared a pen with Cassidy and Sundance, but soon began to bully the younger pair. He now shares with Matilda.

Spock
A member of IAR’s staff spotted Spock, who was being kept at a local shop, and reported it to us. Spock was very young and chained to the shop door; he had no water or shade.

Shivanee
She was bought to the IAR centre at about 9 months old. It is very likely that she was one of the same group of babies being sold on the beach in 2005/6 that we missed. She joined the troop of 6 we had rescued and immediately took on the role of lead female.
